Oil prices and the U.S. economy

Here’s why I believe that the current high price of oil is not enough to derail the U.S. economic recovery. New Jersey Historical Gas Price Charts Provided by GasBuddy.com

Although the prices of oil and gasoline have risen significantly from their values in October, they are still not back to the levels we saw last spring or in the summer of 2008. There is a good deal of statistical evidence (for example, [1],[2]) that an oil price increase that does no more than reverse an earlier decline has a much more limited effect on the economy than if the price of oil surges to a new all-time high.

One reason for this is that much of the impact on the economy of an increase in oil prices comes from abrupt changes in the patterns of consumer spending. For example, one thing we often observe when oil prices spike up is that U.S. consumers suddenly stop buying the less fuel-efficient vehicles that tend to be manufactured in North America. How to beat rising home insurance

The cost of home insurance is set to increase over the next few months but taking a few simple measures now you can help keep premiums to a minimum.

Households benefited from falling home insurance premiums over the first half of the year, according to MoneySupermarket’s inaugural Home Insurance Monitor. However, over the last few months that trend seems to be reversing and price increases are expected.

Does Where You Live Matter?

You’ll probably all make fun of me for this, but that’s okay. I live exactly 3 blocks from the house I grew up in.

Hmm… no Momma’s boy jokes yet? I’m sure there will be some by the end of the post. Or, at least in the comment section.

Anyway, you can probably imagine the reasons why I live so close to my parents. My family is important to me, so I wanted to be close to them. I think the neighbourhood I live in is wonderful – there are all sorts of mature trees, it’s quiet, it’s flanked by all sorts of nature and the yards are ample, which isn’t a priority for developers these days. We live in a small town, which means housing costs are reasonable. And although now place will ever be entirely crime free, it sure does seem like my small town is.

Meanwhile, I can see the appeal of a larger centre. Opportunities are definitely more plentiful, especially if you’re in a more specialized field. There’s always some
